What is actually in the price

A skip hire price is mostly a disposal price with a lorry attached. Landfill tax runs over £100 per tonne at the standard rate, so disposal is the biggest chunk, followed by transport, the firm's overheads, and the council permit if the skip sits on the road. Heavier, less recyclable waste costs the firm more to tip and that flows straight into your quote. Full breakdown in our cost guide article.

The extras that catch people out

  • Overweight skips. Fill an 8 yarder to the brim with rubble and the driver may refuse to lift it, and you still pay for the visit.
  • Banned items. Fridges, mattresses, plasterboard, tyres and paint carry surcharges of £15 to £40 each if left in a general skip.
  • Overfilling. Waste above the rim is illegal to transport. Level loads only.
  • Extended hire. After the included one to two weeks, expect a few pounds per day. Ask upfront.
  • Permits. On-road skips need a council permit, £15 to £70 in most areas. Our permit guide has the detail.

Cost questions

How much is a skip for a week in the UK?
Most standard hire prices already cover one to two weeks, so a 6 yard skip for a week typically costs £180 to £280 all in. You are not usually paying per day unless you keep it beyond the agreed period.
What is the cheapest way to hire a skip?
Book direct with a local firm, keep the skip on your driveway to avoid the permit fee, and order the right size first time. Those three decisions matter more than any discount code.
Why is skip hire so expensive?
Landfill tax and disposal fees. More than half of what you pay typically goes on getting rid of the waste legally, and that cost has risen year on year.
Do skip prices include VAT?
Not always, and this catches people out. Ask whether a quoted price includes VAT before comparing firms, especially with smaller operators.
