What size skip do I need?
For most household jobs, a 6 yard skip is the answer. It takes roughly 50 to 60 bin bags of waste, fits on a normal driveway, and costs somewhere between £180 and £280 in most of the UK. If you take nothing else from this guide, take that.
But "most jobs" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, so here is the proper breakdown.
The quick answer by project
| Project | Recommended size | Roughly holds |
|---|---|---|
| Garden tidy, small clear out | 4 yard | 30 to 40 bin bags |
| Bathroom refit | 4 or 6 yard | 30 to 60 bin bags |
| Kitchen renovation | 6 or 8 yard | 50 to 80 bin bags |
| Full house clearance | 8 or 12 yard | 80 to 120 bin bags |
| Building work, extensions | 8 yard (heavy waste) or 12 yard (mixed) | varies |
| Shop fit-out, big renovations | 12 to 16 yard | 120 bags and up |
A yard here means a cubic yard. A 6 yard skip holds six cubic yards of waste, which is about 4.6 cubic metres. Nobody stands in their garden thinking in cubic metres, which is why the bin bag comparison exists.
The mistake almost everyone makes
People order too small. It is the most common problem in skip hire by a distance, and it is expensive. If your 4 yard skip fills up and you need a second one, you are paying full delivery and collection twice. The jump from a 4 yard to a 6 yard skip usually costs £30 to £50 more. A second skip costs £150 plus.
The rule of thumb from people who do this for a living: work out what you think you need, then go one size up. Waste expands once it is out of the ground or off the wall. A stud wall looks small until it is in pieces on your lawn.
Heavy waste changes everything
Soil, rubble, concrete, bricks and hardcore are dense. Skip lorries have legal weight limits, so most firms will not collect a large skip full of heavy waste. In practice:
- 8 yards is usually the biggest skip you can fill entirely with soil or rubble.
- Anything from 10 yards upwards should be mixed or light waste only.
- Some firms offer 4 or 6 yard skips specifically rated for heavy loads, sometimes with drop doors so you can wheelbarrow straight in.
If your job is mostly digging or demolition, tell the skip company. They would rather advise you upfront than turn up and refuse an overweight skip, which does happen, and you still pay for the wasted trip.
The main sizes, briefly
2 yard (mini skip). Around 20 to 30 bin bags. Fine for a small garden job or a single room declutter. Often not much cheaper than a 4 yard, so check both prices before committing.
4 yard (midi skip). The classic bathroom skip. Takes tiles, an old suite, a bit of plaster and the packaging from the new stuff.
6 yard (builder's skip). The most hired size in the UK, and the default for a reason. Kitchens, medium garden landscaping, part house clearances.
8 yard. The biggest skip most firms will fill with heavy waste. Good for extensions, garage clearances and full renovations of smaller houses.
10 to 12 yard. Big, light-ish loads. House clearances, shop refits, large amounts of furniture or green waste. Check your driveway can actually take one, they are over 12 feet long.
14 to 16 yard. Commercial territory. Bulky light waste in volume.
20 to 40 yard (roll on roll off). These need a proper site and a bigger lorry. Construction and industrial only.
What about space at your property?
A skip needs somewhere to sit. On a driveway, measure it. A 6 yard skip is roughly 10 feet long and 5 feet wide, and the lorry needs room to lift it over. If the skip has to go on the road, you need a council permit, which your skip firm will normally arrange for you. Fees vary by council, typically £15 to £70. Our skip permit guide covers this properly.
FAQ
What is the most popular skip size in the UK?
The 6 yard builder's skip. It balances capacity, price and driveway footprint better than anything else, which is why it is the default for kitchen refits and general renovations.
Can I put soil in a 12 yard skip?
Usually not. Most firms limit soil and rubble to 8 yard skips or smaller because of lorry weight limits. Ask before you book if your waste is heavy.
How many bin bags fit in a 4 yard skip?
Around 30 to 40 standard bin bags, or roughly 40 wheelie bin loads of loose waste less. Bulky items like furniture eat space faster than bags do.
Is it cheaper to hire one big skip or two small ones?
One big skip, almost always. Each hire carries its own delivery, collection and disposal costs, so two 4 yard skips cost considerably more than one 8 yard.
